Creative Movie Posters

Photographers who shoot for movie posters are known as unit still photographers or set photographers. Their work is essential for the marketing and promotion of a film.

Here's how they contribute to movie posters:

  • Capture "hero" shots: During filming, they photograph scenes and actors to capture striking, high-resolution images that can later be used for advertising. These are not screenshots from the movie but specifically framed and composed shots for promotional use.

  • Conduct special shoots: For major theatrical posters, a separate and staged photoshoot with the main actors might be arranged. The unit still photographer may also be brought in for these sessions to create the key artwork.

  • Work with marketing: The images are delivered to the studio's marketing department and graphic designers, who select and often collage the photos into the final poster design.

  • Document behind-the-scenes: In addition to poster-worthy shots, they also capture behind-the-scenes footage used for magazines, websites, social media, and other publicity materials.
